Polartec and Unifi team up on new recycling program

Polartec is continuing its commitment to responsible development and eco-engineered products. After the introduction of the REPREVE 100 yarn, made out of 100% recycled clear plastic bottles, Polartec and Unifi are teaming up again to expand the REPREVE brand.

In a recent press release, the two companies announced the launch of the REPREVE® Textile Takeback Program. Having a yarn made of recycled material is good, but its production still creates waste in the form of textile scraps.

The new program is a first and will allow textile waste to be collected and re injected in the production cycle by converting it into a new REPREVE product, the REPREVE Takeback fiber. We estimate that 8 to 15% of all the fabric produced end up as cut waste. Starting 2012, Polartec will use 5% of these in its Repreve 100 yarn, making it 95% recycled bottles and 5% cut waste.

Roger Berrier, president and COO for Unifi commented:

“The Textile Takeback Program provides the industry with a responsible and sustainable outlet for this waste, while expanding the growth and reach of the REPREVE brand.”
