Peak to Plateau is launching on Kickstarter its Yak Wool baselayers. The young New Zealand-based company blends the wool with Tencel to create an outdoor-focused product line.
Although it might seem Kickstarter campaigns for outdoor related gear are popping up like mushrooms, it is good to see some new companies trying to disrupt the handful of big manufacturers. Peak to Plateau is focusing on making the best baselayers for now. Using yak wool sourced from the Tibetan plateau and Tencel, they have created three tops: the Kailash, long sleeves + thumbs hoops, 1/4 zip, the Nomad Crew, like the Kailash but no zip and the Namtso, a short sleeve tee.
Yak wool is a natural fiber that is said to be 40% warmer and 65% more breathable than Merino while keeping the same anti-bacterial properties (does not stink even after days of use). Tencel is a made from eucalyptus, very strong and very smooth.
If Peak to Plateau delivers on the quality and sustainability of their offering that might have a great product in their hands. During the Kickstarter campaign, you can pick up the Namtso for $60, the Nomad Crew for $95 or the Kailash for $100.
