Scarpa Release 100% Biodegradable Shoe

The New Spring Range from Scarpa will feature a 100% biodegradable shoe.

The Mojito Bio, features a biodegradable EVA midsole, and an innovative new biodegradable rubber blend for the outer. The uppers use “Bio Knit Fabric”, a breathable material again made from plant based fibers.

The shoe’s biodegradable status has been verified by Intertrek, and recognised at the Outdoor Retailer Innovation Awards winning most innovative product.

The Problem with Shoes Built to Last

We all want a durable shoe that will last us through the years. But did you know that most shoes take 40 to 50 years to decompose? The midsole of some running shoes can last up to 1000 years in landfill conditions!

“With 300 million pairs of shoes getting tossed out by Americans each year to pile up in landfills, footwear is a good segment to focus on for biodegradable materials,” said Cameron Martindell, an Outdoor Retailer Innovation Award judge.

The Scarpa Mojito Bio will decompose rapidly. After just 450 days in landfill 85% of the shoe will be totally degraded.

The Scarpa Mojito Bio 100% Biodegradable Shoe

The Mojito Bio is based on Scarpa’s popular outdoor casual shoe, the Mojito.
Inspired by their climbing and approach shoes, it looks like it could take a fair amount of wear and tear. It’s designed for hanging around the campsite rather than on the mountain though.

The Mojito is the brand’s most popular model, so the change to biodegrable should have a significant impact.

(I’ve got to say I’m a little surprised that the Mojito is so popular, it’s so ugly. I thought the Italian’s had style! I can only presume it must be really comfy?)

The Mojito’s Vital Statistics:

  • Bio Knit Fabric upper is super breathable and 100% biodegradable.
  • Lining and laces: Cotton based stretch fabric and laces are 100% biodegradable.
  • Midsole: EVA midsole provides cushioning and is 100% biodegradable.
  • Outsole: SCARPA outsole with natural rubber compound for eco-friendly performance.
  • Packaging: Recycled cardboard and paper packaging.

The Mojito Bio will be available from Spring 2021. You can check it out on the Scarpa website here.
