REI Debuts Hiking Boot Range

Outdoor mega brand REI Co-op debuts its new Hiking Boot Range in Spring 2021.

Founded in 1938, REI has long been a leading name in camping equipment, but this will be their first ever footwear line.

The initial drop features two models, the Traverse and the Flash, with a third planned for later in the year.

The Traverse and the Flash

REI’s debut hiking range is looking to go broad with its market appeal.
The Traverse is is aimed at the more serious hiker, with the design focused on backpacking.

The Flash is a more lightweight, versatile boot targeted at recreational hikers.

Tried and Tested

Prior to launch, 100 testers put in over 2000 hours on the trails to ensure the boots met expectations.

“We made sure that we were getting all type of terrain, sand, dirt, snow, mud, rain. One of the best stories was from a tester in Alaska who got the boots and that exact same day put the Flash on and went on a 17-hour hike. He sent a video when he got back saying, ‘I’m a fan, I’m in. This is it.’ We were happy to see what we were working on functioned and did what we were hoping it would do.”

Based on the feedback, the Traverse got additional width and depth in the forefoot. They also upgraded the eyelets, nylon shank and laces.

Footwear with a Lighter Footprint

“Footwear with a Lighter Footprint” REI’s mission for these shoes.

The original plan was to use 100% recycled or bio-based content. After testing, two parts were replaced with virgin materials, the eyelets and shank.

REI decided this was a worthwhile compromise, as durability and performance will always be top priority. Plus, a longer lasting boot is also a more sustainable boot.

HydroWall Waterproofing Technology

HydroWall, is REI’s proprietary waterproofing technology, also debuting with the boots.

It’s made with 75% recycled content, and got stellar reviews from the testers. REI are confident that it can go head to head with the big name waterproof fabrics already on the market.

The company sat that this will be the first of many new sustainable technologies to come.

REI Sustainable Hiking Boot Range Available Now

Both the Traverse and the Flash are available now in men’s and women’s versions.

The Flash boost retail at $130, the Traverse $150. You can find more info and purchase at www.rei.com
