Omni-Heat Black Dot wins Popular Science Award

Columbia Sportswear’s patent pending new “thermal shield” Omni-Heat Black Dot, has just won a Popular Science Award.

Launched in October by the Oregon based outdoor brand, it acts as a “heat magnet”, trapping warmth via thousands of of multi-layered black dots.

When combined with Columbia’s Omni-Heat 3D thermal-reflective lining, this should make for their most advanced winter jackets to date.

Patent-Pending Technology

The technology features thousands of tiny black dots on the exterior. Each dot is made from aluminium, with a black coating to maximise the absorption of heat from sunlight.

Tests in the lab, and the mountains, indicate that this new material holds the heat longer than usual.

The Black Dot technology is the perfect complement to the Omni Heat reflective lining. The thermal liner which reflects body heat back to the wearer, is now celebrating its 10th anniversary.

“To maximize a shell fabric’s heat retention, we looked closely at low-emissivity windows that rely on a thin layer of metal on the glass, We’d never seen insulation placed on the outer layer of a jacket before, and we’ve been extremely impressed with the heat absorption and retention performance throughout our testing in the laboratory and in frigid climates around the world.”

Haskell Beckham, PhD, Columbia’s Sr. Director of Apparel Innovation.
